Description

This course provides training for personnel who are required to control traffic with a Stop/Slow bat. This course does not qualify a participant to set up or work with traffic control plans.   In the course information provided, ATAC will refer to the following two (2) target groups:  

  • New Entrant workers (NE) – these are students who have little to no experience in the traffic control industry, or cannot provide any evidence of current qualifications or experience.
  • Existing workers (EW) – these are students who HAVE and CAN PROVE current industry experience in the traffic control industry and hold current qualifications.

Assessment Description

NE – New entrant workers will be required to meet the minimum requirements for assessment, which included:

  • Complete full duration of face-to-face training
  • Complete the theory assessment for all units of competency
  • Supply a completed third party verification report, completed by relevant workplace supervisor
  • Complete a practical assessment on a live worksite under the observation of a Roads and Maritime Services approved trainer/assessor
  EW – Existing workers will be required to meet the minimum requirements for assessment, which included:
  • Supply evidence to be considered for Recognition of prior learning (RPL) for each individual unit of competency
  • Complete the theory assessment for all units of competency
  • Supply a completed third party verification report, completed by relevant workplace supervisor
  • Complete a practical assessment on a live worksite under the observation of a Roads and Maritime Services approved trainer/assessor

This course is aimed at any person who may be required to control traffic using a stop/slow bat in the road construction & maintenance industry. (e.g. Field Staff)

Course Content

As part of this course delivery, students will be trained and assessed on the following components from within the nationally recognised skill set:

  • Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances
  • Maintain traffic incident reports
  • Understand the Traffic Control Guidance Schemes (TCGSs) also known as Traffic Control Plan (TCPs) for the site
  • Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements
  • Carry out risk assessments for personal safety
  • Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
  • Use communication methods and devices
  • Conform to traffic control policy and procedures
